【CMHnews Edmonton PostOn the afternoon of March 28, a multicultural concert featuring guzheng performance and diverse artistic forms was held at the Muttart Theatre—Stanley A. Milner Library in downtown Edmonton. The event attracted a large community audience, who gathered in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere to experience the beauty of cultural exchange through music.

Political and Academic Support Creates a Warm Atmosphere

Before the concert began, Alberta MLA Nathan Ip delivered remarks and presented an award to guzheng artist Wenchi Ma, recognizing her long-standing contributions to promoting Chinese culture and serving the local community. He noted that cultural events like this help bring different ethnic groups closer together and strengthen community cohesion.

Professor Daniel Fried, Director of the East Asian Studies program at the University of Alberta, also attended the event and expressed his appreciation for the concert’s role in fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between East and West.

Fusion Performance of Guzheng and Drums Energizes the Audience

The concert opened with “The Kingdom Under Heaven,” performed in a cross-genre collaboration between guzheng and drum set. The dynamic rhythm and strong musical tension quickly energized the audience, creating an enthusiastic response.

Subsequent pieces, including “Spring Dawn Over Snowy Mountains” and “Spring Comes to the Xiangjiang River,” offered more lyrical and flowing musical expressions, allowing the audience to experience vivid natural imagery through sound.

Works such as “Red Flowers Blooming on the Mountain” and “Drum Music on Fragrant Hill” brought a more passionate and rhythmic energy, showcasing the vitality and expressive power of traditional Chinese folk music. Many audience members were seen gently nodding along, fully immersed in the performance.

Multicultural Collaboration Enriches the Audience Experience

One of the highlights of the concert was the integration of multiple cultural art forms on the same stage.

Indian classical dance pieces “Puspan Jali” and “Ekadantay Vakratunday” were performed alongside guzheng music. The dancers’ graceful movements and rhythmic precision complemented the flowing sound of the guzheng, creating a vivid and immersive artistic experience.

The “Medley of Chinese and Foreign Pieces” further blended Eastern and Western musical traditions, seamlessly connecting different styles and demonstrating the universal language of music.

Balance of Tradition and Innovation in a Rich Program

The program combined traditional masterpieces with modern creative works.

The Beijing opera and guzheng collaboration “The Drunken Imperial Concubine – Moon Over the Sea” showcased the elegance and depth of Chinese traditional performing arts, drawing many audience members to capture the moment.

The contemporary piece “Fantasy” featured a freer musical structure and more expressive interpretation, highlighting new possibilities for the guzheng in modern music.

The final major work, “The River All Red,” performed by guzheng and piano, delivered a powerful emotional climax that left a deep impression on the audience.

Bridging Distance Through Music

The concert concluded with a joint ensemble performance of “Fisherman’s Song at Dusk,” bringing a gentle and peaceful atmosphere to the hall.

After the performance, many audience members remained to talk and share their impressions. Several noted that the concert was both artistically rich and approachable, making it easier to connect with different cultures.

Culture Comes Alive Through Exchange

The organizers stated that the goal of the event was to help more people understand traditional Chinese music while also providing a platform for cultural exchange between diverse communities.

In a multicultural city like Edmonton, music serves as a natural bridge of communication. People from different backgrounds come together through shared appreciation, finding resonance in the same performance.

This concert was not only an artistic presentation, but also a meaningful expression of community connection. Through such exchanges, culture becomes more vibrant, dynamic, and closely connected to everyday life.
