Policy Launch: Digital Transformation Solving the "Care Maze"

On February 18, 2026, the Government of Alberta officially announced the launch of the new Assisted Living Navigation Portal. Described as a "one-stop shop," this digital tool aims to help Alberta seniors and their families more easily find, understand, and access assisted living supports across the province.

For too long, finding the right senior living arrangement has been a heavy burden for families. The new portal consolidates fragmented information through plain-language guides, interactive maps, and a self-assessment tool. Most notably, it achieves real-time transparency for core data, including vacancy rates, out-of-pocket costs, and the number of available supportive living spaces.

Voices from Leadership: Putting Seniors First, Restoring Family Confidence

The provincial leadership and industry experts have high expectations for this initiative.

Premier Danielle Smith stated: "As more seniors need continuing care, we’re taking action to make the system clearer and easier to access. This portal is an important tool to provide detailed information on all the available assisted living sites in Alberta to help families find the support they need. We’re focused on building a system that puts seniors first and gives families confidence in the care their loved ones receive."

Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon added: "Finding assisted living shouldn’t be complicated. As Albertans age, it’s critical that they understand the supports available to them. This new portal cuts through the complexity, making it easier for Albertans to find the right assisted living option for them and take the next step with confidence.”

Exclusive Interview: A Conversation with Minister Jason Nixon

On February 20, CMH News conducted a special  telephone interview with Minister Jason Nixon. The Minister analyzed the profound significance of this technological innovation and shared his personal sense of mission in improving the quality of life for seniors.

Part 1: From Information Asymmetry to Decision Empowerment

CMH News: Minister, the launch of this portal is a significant step. For many families, the system has felt like a "complex puzzle." This portal puts real-time data directly into the hands of the public. In your vision, how will this transparency fundamentally change the way families make decisions starting today?

Minister Jason Nixon: "Frankly, it was shocking that AHS was not tracking how many beds we had or where the vacancies were. Albertans ended up in a very confusing place. By bringing this all into one spot through the portal, it’s going to have a significant impact. It speeds things up for families and, most importantly, alleviates pressure inside our emergency system by getting people to the right care spaces instead of being stuck in acute care."

Part 2: Eliminating Systemic Complexity and Rebuilding Public Confidence

CMH News: Both you and Premier Smith emphasized "putting seniors first" and "eliminating complexity." Why was it a top priority to solve this complexity now? Beyond the tool itself, how do you see this transparency building long-term public confidence as our population ages?

Minister Jason Nixon: "It’s a priority because Albertans deserve an easy access point, and we must utilize the entire investment made by taxpayers. Previously, thousands of spaces sat empty because nobody could see what was taking place across the province. By bringing this together, we ensure we are caring for those who built our province in the most effective way. This transparency is key to building long-term confidence as we age."

Part 3: From Digital Navigation to Human Fulfillment

CMH News: With 80,000 service connections and now this portal, what is your primary vision for the rest of 2026? Personally, what has been the most rewarding part of making these essential services so much more 'reachable' for our seniors and vulnerable Albertans?

Minister Jason Nixon: "The main goal is simple: seniors staying in acute care hospitals waiting for a bed has dropped by 60% in five months because of these efforts. My vision for 2026 is to bring another 3,700 spaces online. Personally, the most rewarding thing is that our grandparents and parents are not stuck in hospitals; they are in great communities receiving the care they need and living their best senior life."

Conclusion: From Transparency to Dignity — A New Chapter for Alberta’s Senior Care

From shattering the "information black box" to rebuilding systemic trust, Alberta is embarking on a profound governance transformation with transparency at its core. For every family advocating for their parents' health and stability, the significance of this change goes far beyond a set of flickering data on a screen.

The launch of the Assisted Living Navigation Portal is not only a pivotal component of the Assisted Living Framework announced in December 2025, but also the essential "soft infrastructure" supporting the government's multi-billion dollar investment in care spaces over the next decade. The parallel advancement of digital navigation and physical expansion marks a leap in Alberta’s care system from "reactive response" to "precision matching."

As Minister Jason Nixon articulated during our interview, the government’s goal is not just to build structures, but to foster a responsive, sustainable, and compassionate system. Through this exclusive conversation, we can clearly foresee an era where information is accessible and aging is dignified. Here, every senior is not just a recipient of care, but a respected and cherished builder of our province.
